Biography

Maynard A. Amerine (1911-1998) was Professor of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis. He was born in San Jose and spent his childhood on his family's farm near Modesto, California, where he attended school with Ernest and Julio Gallo. In 1935, while still completing his doctorate, Amerine became UC Davis's new Department of Viticulture and Enology's first official researcher. He became a full professor in 1952 and chaired the Department of Viticulture and Enology from 1957 to 1962. Amerine retired from the department in 1974, but remained active in teaching, public speaking, and travel until his death in 1998. Amerine's sixteen books and hundreds of articles remain foundational texts in the study of wine making and sensory evaluation.
