Historical Background
The Intercontinental Dictionary Series (IDS) is a database of vocabulary lists in different world languages. The IDS allows
users to make custom tables that compare different languages side-by-side. The idea for the IDS originated in 1957 when Mary
Ritchie Key, the general editor of the IDS, was on a Fulbright in Chile. After she returned from Chile she initiated different
pilot projects at the University of California, Irvine. In 1982, a computer science and math major created a program they
called "SYNCOG," which later became the International Dictionary Series.
