Biographical Note

Gail A. Schlachter (1943-2015) worked for more than 30 years as a librarian, administrator, educator, and publisher in the library and information science fields. She served on professional councils, as editor of the journal Reference and User Services Quarterly, and received numerous awards and recognitions for her work as well as for her publications. In 1971, Schlachter became the first doctoral graduate in Library Science at the University of Minnesota. She was also the founder and president of Reference Service Press, a company that focuses on developing and disseminating financial aid resources for college and graduate students. During the 1970s and 1980s, Schlachter published books containing information on available U.S. scholarships and financial aid, including The Directory of Financial Aids for Women, later followed up with The Directory of Financial Aids for Minorities, along with books detailing opportunities for veterans, people with disabilities, and other special groups. The information Schlachter collected was compiled into a digital database of scholarships, which is currently run and updated by her former colleague. The database includes scholarship information shared with other database services such as Scholarships for Service, a tool that helps military families find financial aid. In 2015, she was posthumously inducted into the California Library Hall of Fame for her many contributions to the profession.
