    Biography/Administrative History

    Sheldon I. Kellogg, Jr. was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1847. He moved to New York and participated in shooting contests there, a member of the National Guard of New York state. Moving to California in 1874, in 1876 he married Abby Ann Tubbs, daughter of Hiram Tubbs of the cordage works. A resident of Oakland, Colonel Kellogg was known for many years as a champion pistol shot on the West Coast, and when he died in 1933 was the oldest member of the National Rifle Association.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    Scrapbook includes news clippings, card photographs (one depicting Camp Bartlett, Healdsburg, July 1887), general orders of the National Guard of California, ephemera, and three letters, bulk dating 1884-1894. Chiefly a collection of newspaper clippings which report results of competitions, awards given, target practice and drills, and rifle association meetings. Earliest material is postcard addressed to Kellogg advertising American Rifle Club match, Creedmor Rifle Range, Queens, N.Y., 1873. Venues include Shell Mound Park in Emeryville and Schuetzen Park in Alameda, and clips document activities of the California Schuetzen Club and National Guard of California. There is extensive coverage of annual encampment of the Guard at Camp Stoneman, Santa Cruz, August 1875, including a sham battle, and competitions at the California Midwinter Exposition, 1894. Scrapbook includes scores recorded in manuscript and print. Latest material is a brochure published by NRA, circa 1926.
