Biography/History

Beginning in 1960s the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) began to fund educational efforts primarily within the Cholo, Blantrye and Chikwawa districts of Malawi, Africa. The largest project was the Malawi Polytechnic University Project. The objective of this project was to create a trained vocational workforce for a self sustainable economy. The United States granted $2,283,000 out of a total cost $2,629,500. In addition to providing funds that went towards construction and equipment, USAID also sent nine technical specialists from the University of Southern California, as well as 1,500 books to start a library. Harold Marius Lange was the registrar of apprentices at the Malawi Polytechnic University and a member of the advisory committee of the apprenticeship board. It is unclear whether or not he was one of the technical specialists sent to Malawi from the University of Southern California.
