Historical Note

"The Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB) was founded as alternative arts space Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (CAF) in 1976 by artists and art supporters seeking a venue dedicated solely to contemporary art as a "forum" for the display of and discussion about artwork being made today, both locally and in the larger national and international art community.
CAF found its first home in the historic Balboa Building in downtown Santa Barbara, before moving into the current 3,500 square foot venue in the Paseo Nuevo Shopping Center in 1990. From 2011 to 2018, MCASB operated a satellite location at the Hotel Indigo Santa Barbara on lower State Street, near the Funk Zone neighborhood and the Cabrillo coastline. This site enabled MCASB to further its mission by offering cutting-edge exhibitions and public programs to an even larger segment of the community—free of charge. The space also enhanced MCASB's capacity for creative partnerships with local neighborhood associations such as the Funk Zone, Santa Barbara Waterfront, Urban Wine Trail, Stearns Wharf, and the Historic Downtown Santa Barbara Arts District.
In 2012, CAF became Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB) with a refined mission toward education and the arts. MCASB became an American Alliance of Museums accredited institution in 2016. Operating as a kunsthalle, MCASB continues to function as a non-collecting, non-profit museum dedicated to innovative and experimental contemporary art and arts education.
Its world-class roster features solo and group exhibitions of artists of diverse media, ethnicity, geography, and gender, with accompanying scholarly publications serving as critical contributions to the field of art. MCASB promotes avant-garde performance art and has been the only Santa Barbara museum with an ongoing roster of new music, dance, video, and performance art, often co-sponsored with local institutions.
MCASB presents 3-4 exhibitions and over 30 special events each year. Admission to the MCASB remains free and open to all."

Series 3: Brochures, Flyers, Catalogs, and Posters

Scope and Content

This series consists of four subseries. The first subseries, Brochures and Flyers, make up the majority of the series. They are arranged by year and document exhibitions and events held at the museum.
The second subseries, Bloom Project Brochures, 2005-2013, are special brochures for the exhibition series, Bloom Project, which featured artwork by regional, national, and international emerging, early-career, or under-recognized artists. Bloom Projects gave contemporary artists whose work had begun to garner significant attention an opportunity to move beyond their studio practice, encouraging experimentation and giving them the resources necessary to further their careers as professional visual artists.
The third subseries, Artist/Exhibition Catalogs, documents the artists' exhibitions, public collections, bibliography, and education in book form. These are arranged by year.
The fourth subseries, Posters, are posters from various exhibitions. There are 11 small posters and 17 large posters.

Series 4: Press Clippings

Scope and Content

This series contains three subseries: Scrapbooks, Press Clippings, and Announcements and Press Releases.
The first subseries, Scrapbooks, includes 17 scrapbooks and two folders of scrapbook pages of press clippings, announcements, brochures, pictures, and flyers from 1980-2009. Scrapbooks are labeled by date and the pages are, for the most part, arranged in order by date.
The second subseries, Press Clippings, contains press clippings from three flat boxes labeled "Press Archives" for years 2010-2012, but also includes clippings from 2006, 2008, 2009, 2013 and 2014. This subseries also includes loose clippings and copies of clippings regarding news about the organization, exhibition announcements and reviews, advertisements found in the newspapers, and artists. These clippings are in folders arranged by year. Many of these clippings were from the Exhibitions & Artist Files subseries. The press clippings were taken from Santa Barbara News-Press, Artweek, Sundial News & Review, The Independent, ArtScene, Los Angeles Times, and some international papers.
The third subseries, Announcements/Press Releases, contains clippings and online announcements of organizational news and exhibitions dating from 1977-2019, as well as press releases from the 1990s.
