    Scope and Content

    Clippings, correspondence, meeting minutes, manuscripts, flyers, notes, financial documents, tax forms, receipts, photographs, organizational forms, conference programs, grant applications, chapter lists, bylaws, articles of incorporation, and other material documenting activities of the [Lesbian and] Gay Academic Union (GAU), circa 1970 to 1986. The GAU was founded in New York, N.Y. in 1973 "to promote and disseminate research on homosexuality and gay people." Materials in the collection document activities including Board of Directors meetings, annual GAU conferences, chapters of the GAU, and funding and distribution of scholarships. The bulk of the collection comprises records of the GAU from the period after its Board of Directors moved from New York to Los Angeles in 1978.

    Historical Note

    The Gay Academic Union (GAU) was founded in New York, New York, in 1973, "to promote and disseminate research on homosexuality and gay people." The GAU consisted of a national network of college and university chapters, of which there appear to have been twelve by 1979. In 1978 the GAU's Board of Directors, as well as its annual conference, moved from New York to Los Angeles.
