[Identification of item], Box and Folder number, Werner von Boltenstern Collection of Southern California History Photographs Collection, MS111, Department of Archives and Special Collections, William H. Hannon Library, Loyola Marymount University.

    Collection Description

This collection consists of over seventy black and white photographs, most of which are 8x10, documenting events, places, and persons related to Southern California history. Events include the "La Fiesta de Flores" of Los Angeles (1901) and the Tournament of Roses parade (1896, 1897). Also found are missions, such as the Mission San Diego; persons, such as the actor Basil Rathbone; Los Angeles landmarks, such as Angels Flight; and places such as Pasadena.
The descriptions and dates of the photographs in the box and folder list are taken from captions written on them. The dates of the photographs given in the date field are those of the original photographs, not the copies.
Many of the photographs are reproductions from the Security First National Bank Collection at the Los Angeles Public Library and the Title Insurance Trust Company Collection (now on deposit at the University of Southern California), and from photographers such as David M. Mills, a well-known photographer in the 1950s and 1960s, with a studio in Hollywood, California. Hence, Loyola Marymount University cannot reproduce these photographs.
    Provenance
Internal evidence suggests that Werner von Boltenstern collected the photographs and probably gained some of them from a Helen Benshoff. The photographs most likely came to then Loyola University around 1967, when von Boltenstern donated his postcard collection to the university.
