Abstract: The papers of Farnham P. Griffiths include correspondence and subject files documenting Griffiths' personal and professional
life. Included are materials regarding family history, his education, his work with the University of California, records
of the Maritime Law Association and the Bar Association of San Francisco as well as other institutions of particular interest
to him such as the Bohemian Club, the Rhodes Scholarship and Oxford University. Also included are papers of his father, Griffith
Griffiths, most notably his handwritten sermons as well as Farnham's extensive menu collection and his records regarding the
estate of Henry Morse Stephens. The bulk of the collection was arranged alphabetically by topic and that order has been retained
resulting in an organization into seven series: Correspondence; Topical Files; Writings; Personal; Henry Morse Estate; Griffith
Griffiths; and Menu Collection.

Acquisition Information
The Farnham P. Griffiths Papers were given to The Bancroft Library by Mrs. Farnham P. Griffiths in 1958. Additions were made
in 1965 and 1973. Correspondence written by Farnham P. Griffiths to his then-fiance Marjorie Blanchard Norse was donated by
the family in 2015.

Biographical Information
Farnham Pond Griffiths was born in Alturas, California in Modoc County in 1884. He was raised in Eureka and his father, Griffith
Griffiths was a Congregational minister. Farnham Griffiths attended UC Berkeley from 1902-1906. After graduation he served
as secretary to UC Berkeley President, Benjamin Ide Wheeler. Griffiths was named a Rhodes scholar in 1907, studying at Balliol
College at Oxford University. He returned from Oxford to his position as secretary to President Wheeler in 1910, a position
he held until his appointment as a lecturer of law at the university in 1913. In 1913 he also married Marjorie Blanchard Norse.
Griffiths served as a UC Regent from 1948-1951. He died of a heart attack in 1958 at the age of 73.
Scope and Content of Collection
The papers of Farnham P. Griffiths include correspondence and subject files documenting Griffiths' personal and professional
life. Included are materials regarding family history, his education, his work with the University of California, records
of the Maritime Law Association and the Bar Association of San Francisco as well as other institutions of particular interest
to him such as the Bohemian Club, the Rhodes Scholarship and Oxford University. A particularly rich portion of the collection
is both sides of correspondence between Farnham P. Griffiths and his then-fiance Marjorie Blanchard Norse during their engagement
(1907-1912). The two sides of this correspondence can be found filed under Marjorie Blanchard Norse in the Correspondence
Series. Also included are papers of his father, Griffith Griffiths, most notably his handwritten sermons as well as Farnham's
extensive menu collection and his records regarding the estate of Henry Morse Stephens. The bulk of the collection was arranged
alphabetically by topic and that order has been retained resulting in an organization into seven series: Correspondence; Topical
Files; Writings; Personal; Henry Morse Estate; Griffith Griffiths; and Menu Collection.
