Scope and Content of Collection

Papers of Fred B. Phleger (1909-1993), an oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography who was known for his research in the ecology and paleoecology of marine foraminifera, and who helped establish the field of paleoceanography. The collection includes correspondence, writings, research notes and data, slides, photographs, and films.
The image documentation is particularly focused on Baja California coastline, lagoon, and marsh ecology, including aerial footage. Many of the photographs and films taken in Baja date from 1956 through the early 1960s. There are a few black and white photo albums showing the coastal areas where Phleger took his samples and observations, and many color slides.
Arranged in six series: 1) BIOGRAPHICAL, 2) CORRESPONDENCE, 3) RESEARCH, 4) WRITINGS, 5) PHOTOGRAPHS, and 6) FILMS.

Biography

Fred B. Phleger (1909-1993) was a professor emeritus at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (University of California, San Diego), where he was a pioneer in the ecology and paleoecology of foraminiferan protists.
Two excellent short biographies of Phleger are available online:
Deborah Day, Fred B. Phleger biographical essay , 1998.
Wolfgang H. Berger, Memorial to Fred B. Phleger . Geological Society of America, 1994 June.

PHOTOGRAPHS

Scope and Content of Series

Series 5) PHOTOGRAPHS. Arranged in five subseries by format: A) Color Slides - Plastic, B) Color Slides - Acetate, C) B&W Slides - Glass, D) Prints, and E) Negatives.
Many of the formats contain similar or overlapping documentation, particularly of Baja California coastal research sites in the 1950s and 1960s. Many of the color slides include aerial footage taken from Gifford Ewing's plane. In addition to a small number of portraits and photograph albums showing Phleger at work in Baja California and aboard ships, the Prints subseries contains specimen images of foraminifera. The foraminifera photographs are from Phleger's materials collected from the Marine Foraminifera Lab in Ritter Hall.

FILMS

Scope and Content of Series

Series 6) FILMS: The collection includes nearly 60 films, all silent, and mostly in color. The films were taken by Phleger and Gifford Ewing on their many trips together to Baja California, traveling in Ewing's small plane. They include footage of Guaymas, Merida, Manzanillo, La Paz, Santo Domingo, Acapulco, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, and other cities. The films include aerial footage of the Baja coastline, dessert, sand dunes, plateaus and other terrain. Footage includes Marjorie Temple Phleger and Alice Ewing along with their spouses, camping and conducting experiments.
Arranged in three subseries: A) Indexed Reels, B) Unnumbered Reels, C) Digital-Only Films.
A) Indexed Reels: Fourteen films, numbered 1-22, with gaps. These films were indexed and described by Phleger, and a transcribed copy of the notes is included with this subseries. The 1987 accession record documents that Reel 14 was found to be a copy of Reel 15 (so it was not retained), and Reel 22 is an original positive copy of Reel 21.
B) Unnumbered Reels: Additional short 16mm films not included on the "indexed" list, but with simple descriptions transcribed from the original boxes. Most footage is of Baja, California research trips.
C) Digital-Only Films: Two films that exist only as digital surrogates.
