Abstract: The Sexual Law Reporter was a non-profit organization founded in Los Angeles in 1974 to protect sexual civil liberties by informing the law community on statutory and case law in the field of sexuality. From 1974 to 1979, the Sexual Law Reporter performed research and presented analysis in the form of a quarterly, self-titled newsletter edited and published by Thomas F. Coleman. The collection includes editorial copies, rough drafts, and paste-ups of the newsletter. Also included in the collection are founding documents, mailing lists, and board of directors' records.

Scope and Content

The Sexual Law Reporter records include original founding documents, rough drafts, and paste-ups of the Sexual Law Reporter, 1974-1979. The majority of the material in the collection consists of proofs of articles with corrections and drafts of the newsletter at various stages. The collection also includes founding documents such as the articles of incorporation and records of the board of directors. Also included is a copy of the form used to collect case information including a list of legal topics. The collection also includes copies of the Sexual Law Reporter volumes one through three and indexes for those volumes. Volume three, issue three, includes a special summary of legislation in all states that affected sexual civil liberties.

Administrative History

The Sexual Law Reporter (SLR) was a non-profit organization founded by the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Committee for Sexual Civil Liberties in 1974 in Los Angeles, California. The objective of the SLR was to perform research and present analysis on statutory and case law in the field of sexuality. For six years (1974-1979) the SLR published a quarterly newsletter which was distributed to federal judges, state appellate court judges, bar associations and libraries in order to educate and inform the members of the judiciary on current developments in the field of sexuality and the law. The Sexual Law Reporter was edited and published by Thomas F. Coleman.

Permission for publication is given on behalf of ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives at USC Libraries as the owner of the physical items and is not intended to include or imply permission of the copyright holder, which must also be obtained.
