Biographical/Historical note

The Office of University Advancement has undergone many name changes throughout the years. Its exact origins are difficult to trace, but it was likely started in 1960 as part of John Gothbert’s responsibilities as Coordinator of Publications. In 1963, the department became a distinctly separate entity named College-Community Relations. It subsequently acquired the title of Public Affairs & College Relations. In 1970, after a brief period without an acting director, Durrell M. Gray took over as head of what was then called Information Services, before the name of the department was changed back to Public Affairs in 1971.
The Department of Public Affairs changed its position within the hierarchy of Administration in 1981 and was subsumed under Business Administration Affairs for several years before being moved back to its original place three years later. That same year, Durrell M. Gray became the Assistant Director of University Relations and Dennis G. Lavery became the Director. In 1988, the Department of University Relations acquired the new position of News Director, which was filled by Jane Hines. When the name changed yet again to Public Relations, the department was lacking a Director or Assistant Director, and the new Director of News and Publications, Linda J. Schneider, was the entirety of the acting department. The department changed names once more in 1989, when it became known as University Relations and Development and was directed by John T. Cain until Robert L. Trinchero replaced him in 1992. In 1994, Trinchero took his place as director of what has since been called University Advancement with an unfilled position of Assistant Director and Linda J. Schneider as Director of News and Publications. The Office of University Communications is a department under University Advancement.

Scope and Contents note

The Publications Series comprises the bulk of the collection and contains materials published by the various versions of the University Advancement Department that have existed over the years since the State College for Alameda County was established in 1957. It includes internal publications such as Newsbriefs, News Clips and the Schedule of Classes, as well as news publications such as Haywire, Communique, Inside CSUH, and The View. During the fall of 1959, the Office of the Executive Dean began producing a regular bulletin for faculty and staff called Newsbriefs. In 1963, Newsbriefs ceased publication, and College-Community Relations began an unnamed weekly campus newsletter and calendar of events that soon became known as the Cal State Communique, and by the early 1970s was simply called Communique. In 1990, Communique was replaced by The View, a biweekly newsletter and calendar similarly designed to keep faculty and staff informed. The View was also occasionally distributed to alumni. Haywire served as the quarterly "Newsmagazine of the CSUH Alumni Association" and was later described as "Newsmagazine for Alumni and Friends of Cal State Hayward"; in 2005, the name of this publication was changed to Cal State East Bay Magazine. Many of the Schedules of Classes have added marginalia from staff members in the Administration Department.
