Abstract: Jeane Eddy Westin is a local author from the Sacramento area. The Westin papers collection consists of interviews on cassette tape and in printed form, several newspaper clippings, and correspondence related to her first book, Making Do: How Women Survived the 30s. The book was published in 1976 by Follett Publishing Company and features interviews with several women, some from Sacramento, who survived on little income during the Great Depression.

Biographical Note

Jeane Eddy Westin is a local author who has written articles for many popular magazines, such as Womens Day, Parade and Ms. Making Do: How Women Survived the 30s was her first book, published in 1976, and it features stories told by women she interviewed who were growing up during the Great Depression. Born in July of 1931, Jeane was a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors as well as the Womens Army Corps, where she worked as a cryptographer during the Korean War. Other works she has written include Love and Glory and Swing Sisters, both fictional stories set in the 1930s and 40s. She married Eugene Westin in Sacramento in April of 1962.

Scope and Content Note

The papers are comprised of both printed and recorded interviews by the author, newspaper clippings promoting the release of her book, and outgoing and incoming correspondence relating to the publication of Making Do. The printed interviews are organized alphabetically by interviewee last name, and are told to the author from the perspectives of different women growing up during the Great Depression and making do in hard times.
