Biography
Edward C. Cargile was born in San Diego, California in 1939. He began diving and experimenting with underwater photography
in his early teens. While in high school, Cargile joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. While attending San Diego City College,
he transferred to the Marine Corps Active Reserves.
Cargile completed his B.S. in Phsyics from North American University in 1963. After graduation he worked as an Engineering
Supervisor at Rockwell International, overseeing the Apollo Test Data Processing Unit. Cargile continued diving, training
other divers, including U.S. Navy personnel in the recovery of the Apollo Spacecraft.
Over the years Cargile worked for a number of companies and institutions. He became the Director of the Underwater Technology
Institute (UTI) in 1970, editor of
Aquarius Magazine for the National Association of Scuba Diving Schools in 1971, and Program Manager of the National Association of Underwater
Instructors (NAUI) Diving Association. In 1974, Cargile was hired by the Commercial Diving Center of Oceaneering International
to write training procedures for diving bell and saturation diving operations. He went on to work for Scubapro and then as
the Director of Communications for the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA).
Throughout his life Cargile wrote about diving and the history of divers and taught both diving and underwater photography
