This collection chiefly contains the research papers of Presbyterian missionary Eugene A. Hessel (died 2007) on Filipino nationalist José Rizal (1861-1896).
Background
Eugene A. Hessel was a Presbyterian minister, seminary professor, and missionary in the Philippines (1947-1969). He was a graduate of the San Francisco Theological Seminary. He died in 2007 in Pasadena, California.José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, popularly known as José Rizal (1861-1896) was a Filipino nationalist at the end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He was executed by the Spanish colonial government for the crime of rebellion in 1896.
