Abstract: The collection consists of items related to the attempted resignation of Union Soldier Stiles E. Forsha from his position as the Regimental Quartermaster of the 7 th Regiment, Iowa Infantry in 1862. Materials in the collection include Forsha's letter of resignation, an attached document forwarding and disapproving his request signed by five Union generals, and photographs of those generals and Ulysses S. Grant's aide-de-camp.

Biographical Information:

Stiles E. Forsha fought in the Civil War, entering the war as a First Lieutenant for the 7th Regiment, Iowa Infantry. In August of 1861 he was appointed Quartermaster, and in November of 1862 he was appointed to Commissary of Subsistence of the United States Volunteers. After the war, Forsha and his family moved, ending up in Southern California, where he passed away in 1911.

Scope and Contents

The Stiles E. Forsha Civil War Correspondence Collection consists of items related to the attempted resignation of Union Soldier Stiles E. Forsha from his position as the Regimental Quartermaster of the 7 th Regiment, Iowa Infantry in 1862. In addition to Forsha's letter of resignation written on September 14th, 1862, the collection includes the Union Army's response. This response, denying his resignation, is signed by five Union generals: Thomas Alfred Davies, Pleasant A. Hackleman, Edward Otho Cresap Ord, John Aaron Rawlins, and Elliot W. Rice. Photographs of these generals and Ulysses S. Grant's aide-de-camp are also included in the collection.
