Description
The Robert Ingle Hoyt papers span 68 linear feet and date from circa 1941 to circa 1980. The collection is primarily composed
of architectural drawings and reprographic copies, but also includes black-and-white photographs, negatives, correspondence,
newspaper and magazine clippings, presentation boards, master plans, specifications, and handwritten notes regarding projects.
Background
Robert Ingle Hoyt was born on March 21, 1913 in Connecticut. He studied economics at Roanoke College and architecture at Yale
University. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Yale in 1936. Shortly afterwards, he obtained his first architectural
license in Connecticut. In 1941, Hoyt graduated from Cornell University with his Masters degree in Architecture. Following
school, Hoyt was employed in multiple architectural firms in New York. While there, he worked on large projects where he became
adept at site planning and housing authority. He began military service with the United States Navy for three years after
his stint in New York, during which he taught and constructed a widely used training device. He joined the American Institute
of Architects in 1943 and was elected to the presidency of his local chapter twice and its secretary three times. He married
Anita Virginia (Dibblee) Hoyt in 1944. Hoyt obtained his Californian license in 1946 through a N.C.A.R.B. certificate. In
1947, he opened his own independent firm in Santa Barbara, California, where the majority of his projects were located. Hoyt’s
body of work includes commercial buildings, schools, a museum, parking facilities, military buildings, residences, and even
a juvenile center for Santa Barbara County. Hoyt additionally served on the California Council of Architects Board three times.
Robert Ingle Hoyt died on July 28, 1985.
