Abstract: The Bill Mochon China Marines Photograph Collection reflects Mochon's interest in photography and U.S. Marines history through a collection of twenty photographic prints made from the original negatives collected by Mochon. The photographs primarily depict U.S. Marines in the Legation Quarter area in Peking (Beijing).

Biographical Information:

Bill Mochon was a photographer and U.S. Marine. His early interest in photography was put to work when he served as a U.S. Marine and was eventually assigned to work for the base newspaper. Upon his return to civilian life, he moved to California in the early 1960s and began working as a commercial photographer. He worked for Vic Stein and Associates from 1974-1981. He photographed Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Hollywood Park races, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Dodgers.

Scope and Contents

The Bill Mochon China Marines Photograph Collection includes twenty photographic prints depicting China Marines in Peking, now Beijing, circa 1912 to 1920. Photographs include images of the Legation Quarter, Chien Men Tower, U.S. Marines in uniform, Marine barracks, donkey and camel transportation, and a view from the Tartar Wall. There are also images of Marines in areas outside of the Legation Quarter, including the spirit road to the Ming tombs. Photograghs are arranged in the same order that they were received in.
