Biography / Administrative History

William M. Moremen (1927- ) was raised in the Los Angeles area. He holds degrees from Pomona College and The Divinity School of the University of Chicago. A United Church of Christ minister, he has served five churches in diverse locations including Tehachapi, California; Los Angeles; Washington D.C.; Hayward; and Tiburon. His congregation in Los Angleles was one of the few integrated churches in the nation. In Washington, D.C., his church was involved in a controversy over leasing its facilities to the Metropolitan Community Church, which later became a model of cooperation.
Moremen is among a number of UCC ministers called the "Young Turks," who were active in social justice and other causes. He is a founding member of Shalem, Institute for Spiritual Formation in Washington D.C., and The Pacific Center for Spiritual Formation in the San Francisco Bay area. He has served on the staff of Mercy Center, Burlingame, California, in its program, "The Art of Spiritual Direction." His books include Developing Spiritually and Professionally and Watch and Pray. He retired in the 1990s but has remained active at Pilgrim Place.
