    Historical note

    The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology's historical correspondence files was a filing system designed at the inception of the museum. It is believed that Joseph Grinnell may have designed the system himself. The files are arranged alphabetically by surname and then chronologically. All correspondence relating to curatorial activities, building operations, and general administrative functions were preserved and filed in this collection. The collection dates from the museum's founding in 1908 and ends with 1930. The Museum of Vertebrate Zoology was moved to a new building in 1930 and a new correspondence collection was begun at that time.
    A card catalog of taxonomic and common names referenced in the correspondence collection is available.

    Scope and Contents note

    The historical correspondence consists of correspondence created and received by the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology's personnel primarily from 1908 to 1930. The collection is 54 linear feet (ca. 2000 file folders). A list of holdings is available as an attachment to this guide.
