    Biography/Administrative History

As a self-described "amateur historian", Henry Lind gathered up his gear and car in 1941 with an idea. He wanted to retrace some steps of the old Lassen Trail he had thoroughly studied during the time he was a part time summer worker and volunteer at Lassen National Park. Henry lived in the California "Bay area" in Santa Clara County but his heart and imagination rested upon the "Trail" Peter Lassen tried to "forge". In a series of letters to Ruby Swartzlow, the author of Lassen's definitive biography, Lassen: His Life and Legacy (1964), Lind commented on the "Trail" and Swartzlow's earlier article in the California Historian (it's present name) "Peter Lassen, northern California's Trail-Blazer" (1940). Lind assisted Swartzlow with map construction for the biography and she used several of his photographs to assist in the graphic presentation of the trail.
