Background
The time period covered in the Irish Publications collection is 1820-1921, a time steeped with social, economic, and governmental
changes within Ireland. Between the years of 1801 and 1922, Ireland was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and faced
much strife, including the Great Famine, economic downturns leading to unemployment, loss of Irish culture, and extremes in
poverty and wealth. The Irish War of Independence was fought between the Irish Republican Army and the British security forces
in Ireland from 1919 to 1921. The war ended with a cease-fire and the Irish were able to establish themselves as a free state
through the Anglo-Irish Treaty.
