Biography/Administrative History

The new headquarters of the Socialist Party of San Francisco opened at 225 Valencia Street in mid-June 1919. Their periodical, The Truth, began publishing in August of that year. Robert L. Hartford was probably their printer in 1920; the branch's chief expenses were for advertising and printing. The Party's meeting rooms at 225 Valencia were identified as Marx Hall in July 1919; by September 1920 the building was known as Debs Hall. In 1925, Fabian Ortiz was listed as secretary at the Socialist Party headquarters, 1212 Market Street. The nascent Communist Party is said to have drawn many members away from the Socialists.

Scope and Content of Collection
