Processing Note
When the collection was initially processed in the 1980s, each physical Item was given a unique Item number, except for Items
001 and 002, where there are nitrate negatives, contact interpositives, safety negatives, and photographic prints; Items 003-046,
where there are both nitrate negatives and photographic prints; Item 049, which has a contact interpositive, a safety negative,
and a photographic print; and Item 132, which had two article clippings in one enclosure, assigned one Item number. This has
been noted in the physical description field for each Item, when appropriate.
Generally, each Item number reflects one unique photographic image and the different forms of each image (e.g. a negative
and a print) have been noted in the physical description field. However, during processing in June 2013, it was discovered
that there are photographs in this collection that are the same image, but were assigned different Item numbers. The Processing
Archivist made note of this in the summary note field.
The following photographic images were assigned two different Item numbers by previous SAFR staff, but are actually the same
image:
- Items 002, 193: Captain Fred Klebingat, Gerd Brodmann, and Ernest Aderman at an unidentified rail dock
- Items 007, 204: Three canoes underway in an unidentified body of water in the South Pacific

New Zealand
In June 2013, the Processing Archivist found that all photographs were in blank archival envelopes and Item numbers had been
written on the back of all the small prints in the 5 x 7 inch archival boxes. Item numbers were written on some of the larger
prints as well. Some of the photographic prints had Item numbers written on the back, but were illegible as the photograph
had been cropped and the number cut off. These numbers seem to have been written by SAFR staff and it does not appear that
the original order was maintained.
The photographic prints that were found in the 5 x 7 inch archival boxes had brown envelopes separating the photographs into
different sections, which were labeled: "Aderman," "Early Aderman Vessels," "Yankee," "Zahma," "Navigator" (2 separators had
this label), "Valkyrien," "Fisherman," "Fire At Catalina," and "Misc. Aderman Photos." Although the sections generally reflected
the contents of the groupings, they were not entirely accurate, and there was no apparent order within these groupings (e.g.
chronologically). The Item numbers were retained and the Items were physically arranged according to their assigned Item number.
Images were then intellectually arranged into Series and File Units, using the nomenclature from the labeled sections as much
as possible.
The Items that did not have numbers were given the following numbers, according to where there were gaps in the initial numbering
system or placed at the end of the Item number sequence: 052, 053, 062, 221, 222, 223 and 224. While scanning nitrate negatives
for preservation and access, the Processing Archivist found two nitrate negatives in one enclosure. One of the negatives was
initially assigned Item number 44, and there was a print of this negative with the same number. The other negative had no
apparent Item number and was consequently given the Item number 222.
The enclosures for the nitrate negatives were photocopied for reference when the negatives were digitized. These photocopies
were placed in the collection file for reference as nitrate negatives are stored off-site as a safety precaution.
Description Notes:
Dates refer to when the original photograph was taken. Several of the photographic prints and negatives in this collection
are copies that were made much later than when the original photograph was taken, and the dates of these reproductions were
noted when known.
Dates in the finding aid were mostly taken from annotations on the back of the prints, which were written by Captain Fred
Klebingat. Within particular subjects, some of the dates were not consistent, and the Processing Archivist assigned date ranges
to Items when inconsistencies were found. Some of the dates associated with specific vessels overlap and date ranges were
assigned during processing in 2013 as appropriate.
Most of the photographic prints were annotated on the back by Captain Fred Klebingat. Some of the same photographic images
were used in a binder in the SFMNHP collection, FALLS OF CLYDE (ship) (VM 311 S7 F3 v.1), which includes research about FALLS
OF CLYDE (built 1878; bark, 4m) as well as photographs and research regarding R.P. RITHET (built 1892; bark, 3m) and MELROSE
(built 1902; schooner, 4m). During processing in 2013, the photographs in this collection were cross-referenced with FALLS
OF CLYDE (ship) (VM 311 S7 F3 v.1) and SFMNHP Classified photographs to show where Aderman photographs were used elsewhere
in the SFMNHP collections, where copies of the photographs in this collection were found, and to note the context of the photographs
and their use. When the Processing Archivist was able to identify related photographs, it was noted at the Item level. The
Processing Archivist also used information from these various sources to improve upon dates, names of individuals and summary
note content for
the photographs in this collection.
While Aderman was very likely the photographer of most of the photographs in this collection, we have only listed him as the
creator in Item level descriptions when we were certain he was the photographer.
The descriptions in this collection guide were compiled using the best available sources of information. Such sources include
the creator's annotations or descriptions, collection accession files, primary and secondary source material and subject matter
experts. While every effort was made to provide accurate information, in the event that you find any errors in this guide

GOGA-00789
These photographs were received as a gift from Captain Fred Klebingat in September 1977. All of the photographs were from
the collection of Ernest Aderman. Many of the photographs were taken by Aderman; it is not known how Aderman came to possess
the photographs that he did not take. It is also unknown how these photographs came into Captain Klebingat's possession. Klebingat
and Aderman were shipmates and friends for nearly sixty years before Aderman's death and it is possible that they were given
to Klebingat by Aderman, or by associates of Aderman upon his death, as many of the photographs concern their shared voyages.
SAFR-00001 is a blanket accession that was transferred from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) to the San Francisco
Maritime National Historical Park in September 1988. GGNRA had previously acquired the collection from the San Francisco Maritime
Museum when it became a unit of the National Park Service in 1977.
GOGA-00789 was transferred from the J. Porter Shaw Library to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) in February
1985.
Historical or Biographical Note
Ernest Aderman Biography:
Ernest "Shorty" Aderman (1888-1976) was a master mariner and marine photographer that worked on various vessels in Europe
and the United States in the early twentieth century. He sailed with training ships, light house tenders, lifesaving vessels,
schooners, barks, steamers, fishing vessels, steam schooners and yachts, all before becoming steward at the Los Angeles Yacht
Club in 1942. Aderman documented many of his voyages by taking photographs, many of which he developed himself (some while
on board the vessel).
Ernest Carl F. Aderman was born on the German island of Wollin in the Baltic Sea, on July 24, 1888 (although at least one
source has listed his birthday as July 20, 1886). It should be noted that his name has also been recorded as "Ernst" and "Adermann,"
but official passenger lists, voting records, and death records list his name as "Ernest Aderman." He was known as Shorty
to most of the men that he sailed with. Aderman came from a sea faring family and went to sea as a child on his father's ships.
At age 12 he shipped out on his own as a cabin boy and worked on ships in the Baltic Sea before serving on UNION (ice clipper).
He came to the United States through the port of New Orleans in 1906, most likely on a Hamburg American liner. Aderman deserted
at this time in order to avoid conscription into the German Kaiser's military. He then sailed with Palmer Coal Company coal
schooners and other vessels up and down the East Coast of the United States. It is likely that at this time he served on board
ADAMS
(training vessel) and A.F. COATS (schooner).
Aderman came to the Pacific Coast on CORDOVA (steamship) in 1912. During the years 1914 to 1915, he went to work on R.P. RITHET
(built 1892; bark, 3m). Aderman first met Captain Fred Klebingat as an able bodied seaman on FALLS OF CLYDE (built 1878; bark,
4m) in 1916. During his time with FALLS OF CLYDE, Aderman took many photographs using a postcard-size Kodak camera. He did
his own developing, printing hundreds of images in the fo'c'sle of the ship while on his night watch. While with FALLS OF
CLYDE, Aderman was promoted to 2nd mate. He was still a German citizen and was consequently removed from the vessel in 1917
due to the United States' involvement in World War I.
Sometime in late 1917 or early 1918, Aderman was naturalized as a U.S. citizen and he then registered for the United States
draft. He shipped out with Klebingat as chief mate on MELROSE (built 1902; schooner, 4m) in 1918, and stayed with her for
two years. By 1920, Aderman was living in Alameda, California. After leaving MELROSE, he sailed on steam schooners until 1924.
Aderman was chief mate on MECRONI (steam schooner) from 1919-1922. Then, in 1924, he went into partnership with a steam schooner
mate by the name of Tillman. They built a fishing boat named BALTIC (fishing vessel), and worked in the fishing industry until
their relationship disintegrated. At this time, Klebingat again recruited Aderman as chief mate, this time for Zane Grey's
fishing expedition from 1925-1927 on board FISHERMAN (built 1919; schooner, 3m: yacht).
After returning from Zane Grey's fishing expedition around 1927, Aderman bought the ex rum-runner CRESSY (ship), and renamed
her VAHINE (fishing vessel) with the intent becoming a commercial fishermen. This vessel did not prove to be profitable for
him, and he again sold his boat and joined Klebingat, this time on R.B. Honeyman's yacht ZAHMA (auxiliary ketch, 2m: yacht),
from approximately 1929-1932.
At some point before 1930, Aderman moved to the Los Angeles, California, area. Aderman then shipped out with Klebingat as
chief mate on NAVIGATOR (schooner, 2m: yacht) as early as 1934, and the two sailed together until 1942 when the vessel was
appropriated by the U.S. Coast Guard for engagement in World War II. Overall, Aderman and Klebingat worked together for just
over 17 years.
After leaving NAVIGATOR, Aderman went to work as Yacht Club Steward at the Los Angeles Yacht Club, Fish Harbor, Terminal Island,
where he was known for his efficient and conscientious management. He stopped working at the Yacht Club in 1974 (Zikes, 1960).
According to Captain Fred Klebingat, Ernest Aderman was a master mariner, a "pioneer in marine photography," neat in appearance,
skilled with palm, needle and paintbrush, impressively multilingual, sharp-tongued, trustworthy, and widely respected by those
that knew him (Klebingat, May 8, 1978). Aderman died in Los Angeles, California on April 22, 1976.

Captain Fred K. Klebingat biography:
Captain Fred K. Klebingat (1889-1985) was a sailor throughout his life, a key figure in the drive to establish FALLS OF CLYDE
(built 1878; bark, 4m) as a museum ship in Hawaii in the 1960s, the author of many letters and essays about his seafaring
life (including the series "Christmas at Sea") and was a historian of the age of sail.
Friedrich Karl Klebingat was born near Kiel, Germany, on October 7, 1889. He started his seafaring career in 1905, working
as a deck hand on the full rigged German ship D.H. WATJEN (built 1892; ship, 3m) upon which he rounded Cape Horn to Chile.
Next he signed on as O.S . on Bremen Watjen & Company's bark ANNA (built 1893; bark, 4m). In 1914, he became a U.S. Citizen.
Klebingat was chief mate on FALLS OF CLYDE from 1916-1918. In 1918, he was chief mate of STAR OF POLAND (built 1901; bark,
4m) and he survived its September 15, 1918 wreck in Japan.
Klebingat's first command was in 1918, on the bark CHIN PU, carrying a cargo of empty gin bottles and carboys of acid on deck
from Kobe, Japan, to Manila, Philippines. Her cargo of copra meal caught fire on her second voyage, and she was scuttled in
Nagasaki, Japan. In 1919, Klebingat took command of the four-masted schooner MELROSE (built 1902; schooner, 4m) and was her
master for six years. From 1925-1942, Klebingat was master of Zane Grey's FISHERMAN (built 1919; schooner, 3m: yacht) (ex
MARSHAL FOCH) and other sailing yachts such as NAVIGATOR (schooner, 2m: yacht) and BALI (yacht). During World War II, he commanded
Liberty ships (WM. MULHOLLAND, OLIVER EVANS) and tankers (APACHE CANYON, HARPERS FERRY) in both the Pacific and the Atlantic
Oceans.
After the war, Klebingat returned home to San Pedro, California. He worked various jobs, mostly employed by lumber companies
running goods up and down the Pacific coast. He was a key figure in the 1963 drive which brought FALLS OF CLYDE to Honolulu,
Hawaii as a museum ship, helping to save it from becoming a breakwater in Vancouver, British Columbia. He also served as chief
technical advisor and historian for the FALLS OF CLYDE restoration project. Klebingat retired in the late 1960s. In 1969,
at the age of 80, he skippered the motor ship COOS BAY in the coastwise lumber trade. Klebingat wrote many letters and essays
about his seafaring life (including the series "Christmas at Sea"). He was friends with other maritime historians such as
Harold Huycke and Karl Kortum, with whom he corresponded extensively. Captain Klebingat died on March 31, 1985, at the age
of 95, in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Collection Scope and Content
The Captain Fred K. Klebingat collection of Ernest Aderman photographs, 1912-1974, bulk 1930-1945, (SAFR 23377, P77-015) is
comprised mainly of photographs of yachts and other sailing vessels that Ernest Aderman worked on, mostly on the Pacific Coast
of the United States and in the South Pacific Ocean. The majority of the photographs were taken by Aderman. The collection
has been processed to the Item level and is open for use.
The collection primarily contains photographs of ships and yachts that Ernest Aderman worked on from 1913 to the 1960s. There
are 205 unique photographic images in 281 physical forms (47 nitrate negatives, 3 contact interpositives, 1 copy negative,
2 safety negatives, 219 black-and-white photographic prints, 1 color photographic print, 3 black-and-white picture postcards,
3 black-and-white photographic postcards, 2 color lithographic postcards) and 2 clippings.
Images from this collection depict people and deck scenes of Aderman's early voyages on various vessels, most departing from
the West Coast. There are photographs of vessels that Aderman worked and sailed on from 1913-1942, including FALLS OF CLYDE
(built 1878; bark, 4m), FISHERMAN (built 1919; schooner, 3m: yacht) (1927), NAVIGATOR (schooner, 2m: yacht) and ZAHMA (auxiliary
ketch, 2m: yacht). There are also photographs of vessels that Aderman was not known to be professionally associated with.
Throughout the collection there are many photographs of people: crew on deck working and sea faring life, especially Captain
Fred Klebingat and the crew of NAVIGATOR (schooner, 2m: yacht); local people from the locations Aderman visited; and some
friends and family. There are also photographs of various scenes from his work at the Los Angeles Yacht Club, between 1942
and 1974. Additionally, there are several photographs of fires at the Alameda Lumber Co. and Catalina Island as well as other
people and places.
The majority of the photographs in this collection were taken by Aderman, who took many photographs while he was on board
the vessels he worked on. Ernest was a prolific amateur photographer and carried with him the tools necessary for using flash
photography and for developing camera film at sea. Although Aderman took self-portraits, it is likely that many of the later
photographs, especially those of the Los Angeles Yacht Club, were taken by other people. Of the photographs that Aderman did
not take, known photographers include Bob Ruskauff and Associates, A.W. Powell and Jimmy Wilder. Many of the photographic
prints smaller than 5 x 7 inches appear to be Aderman originals; some of these prints are reproductions. Some of the prints
larger than 5 x 7 inches, excluding those of the Los Angeles Yacht Club, are definitely reproductions.

History:
Zane Grey, an American author, decided to seriously invest in sport fishing as a hobby in either 1924 or 1925; he went to
Nova Scotia and bought the 190-foot coal schooner MARSHAL FOCH (built 1919; schooner, 3m: yacht) for his fishing expeditions.
He renamed her FISHERMAN and had a twin-screw Fairbanks-Morse engine installed. The crew shipped out around November 15, 1925,
without Grey, who never traveled on the vessel. For the duration of the expedition, FISHERMAN served as a floating bunk house
and store ship. It took a crew of approximately seven men to run the vessel: captain (Fred Klebingat), two mates (Ernest "Shorty"
Aderman, first mate; Henry Kruse, second mate), engineer, cook, cabin boy, and a radio operator. Passengers also included
a photographer, Tom Middleton. The vessel had three launches accompanying the fishing party when they set out: RED, LAURIN
G., and GLADIATOR. A fourth launch was later added. Grey chartered an additional two New Zealand launches as well.

the vessel traveled from Huntington, Long Island, to Pasadena, California, and then on to Honolulu, Hawaii. In early 1942,
ZAHMA was acquired by the Port Director of San Diego from R.J. Reem, and less than two weeks later was placed in service for
the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. She was classified as a miscellaneous auxiliary vessel, given the designation IX-63,
and was operated as a local patrol boat out of San Diego. She was then taken out of service in the spring of 1943 and struck
from the Naval Record in 1944.
