Biographical / Historical
The National Mortar Board Society is a women’s honor society formed to recognize the exemplary scholarship, leadership, and
service of college seniors. The society was founded on February 15, 1918 with four initial chapters at Cornell University,
The University of Michigan, The Ohio State University, and Swarthmore College. The Mortar Board began as a local honor society
at The Ohio State University, and a chance meeting with a member of Pi Sigma Chi from Swarthmore College began a discussion
about creating a national honor society for female college seniors. Today, Mortar Board continues to “emphasize the advancement
of the status of women, to support the ideals of the college or university, to advance a spirit of scholarship, to recognize
and encourage leadership, to provide service, and to establish the opportunity for a meaningful exchange of ideas as individuals
and as a group.”
The Pomona College Mortar Board became the organization’s 46th chapter on March 28, 1903, after Dean of Women Jessie Gibson’s
senior women’s honorary society petitioned for incorporation into Mortar Board. The society is still active on the Pomona
campus, and interested students can apply to join the society as rising juniors. Members aspire to put on events and services
for not just Pomona College, but also the 5C and surrounding community.
