First accrual assembled by Special Collections in 2013. Second accrual transferred from KZSC in 2022.

KZSC Santa Cruz radio station

According to KZSC's website, KZSC.org. KZSC began in 1967 as KRUZ in the basement of Stevenson College's dorm 2. In 1976 the station became KZSC and broadcast at 10 watts.
1974 KRUZ becomes KZSC: FM station now broadcasting at 10 watts.
1976 June: FCC application filed to increase wattage.
1976 Sept: Full authority from FCC to construct new transmitting facilities granted.
1980 June 14th: Power increased to 1,250 watts and moved into new campus location. Held new studio open house.
1988 December: FCC Amends its unconstitutional ruling and allows stations "safe harbor" hours from midnight to 6 am.
1989 April: KZSC holds its "Sweet 16″ Anniversary Party.
1991 Spring: U.S Bombing of Iraq: KZSC covers downtown protest (live).
1993: Budget update: KZSC's registration fee allocation cut from $68,000 to $30,000
1993 June 13th: KZSC's 20th anniversary party held at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center
1994: KZSC's 21st birthday party held Live Soup, a now-defunct Santa Cruz brewery.
2002 July: KZSC upgrades its signal to 10,000 watts, allowing us to broadcast to listeners throughout Santa Cruz, San Benito, and Monterey counties.
2002 Spring: The students of UCSC pass Measure IV to provide KZSC with a one-time funding boost to complete a major renovation, bringing us into the 21st century.
2003 Winter: Renovation begins, starting with the Studio B Production Room. KZSC begins internationally accessible webstreaming.
2003 Spring: KZSC's First Annual Spring Festivals featuring Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Coup (who still owe us $500), and Hella.
2004 Winter: First live, play-by-play broadcast of a UCSC sports event on KZSC.
2004 Spring: Spiffy new On-Air studio unveiled
2004 Spring: KZSC's Second Annual Spring Festival featuring Andrew WK.
2005 Winter: KZSC's News Studio is completed
2005 Spring: KZSC's Third Annual Spring Festival featuring Ratatat and High on Fire.
2007 Summer: KZSC finally upgrades its signal to 20,000 watts after months of technical difficulties.

Scope and Contents

Collection includes administrative records, handbooks, correspondence, program guides, promotional materials, newspaper clippings, photographs and other records documenting the UCSC radio station.

Processing Information

This addition is minimally processed. Digital files were received on two CDs. Files were copied off physical media in 2022. Duplicate files were not retained. Files were not reformatted, and file names are original to the creator. Original disks were retained and are included in the collection.

Scope and Contents

This addition to the collection contains administrative files including media council minutes and memos, information on transmitter, information on power increases, correspondence, KZSC constitution, listener letters, budgets, staff lists, KZSC/UC relations files, KZSC task force files, 1998 KQED takeover information, UC Radio Network files. Also includes old licenses, broadcast course materials, station handbooks, program guides (1990s-2016), zines, and photographs. Includes two CDs of digital photographs. The photographs document KZSC staff and volunteers, as well as events, such as Boardwalk Frolic and OPERS Fall Fest.
