Historical Background
Marianna Tcherkassky, born in 1952, is a renowned ballerina. She began her ballet training with her mother and later studied
at the School of American Ballet in New York on a full scholarship. In 1970, Tcherkassky joined the American Ballet Theatre
in 1970 and was the principal dancer from 1976-1996. She retired from performing ballet in 1996 and began teaching throughout
the United States and continues to teach today.
Collection Scope and Content Summary
This collection is composed of a single pair of autographed pink ballet pointe shoes worn by the ballerina Marianna Tcherkassky
in the matinee performance of Giselle with the American Ballet Theatre at the Orange County Performing Arts Center on Saturday,
January 23, 1993.
The red ink inscription on both shoes has faded. On the toe of the left shoe is written “Best wishes always, Marianna Tcherkassky”
and on the toe of the right shoe “Marianna Tcherkassky” is written.
