Abstract: The Tuesday Club of Sacramento was a social club to Sacramento civic and community interests for over 100 years, boasting a membership of more than 1,200 women at its height. This collection is comprised of records documenting the activities of the Tuesday Club from 1955 through 1984, including annual reports, a year book (1976-77), and three program flyers (1962-63).

Historical Note

The Tuesday Club of Sacramento was founded as the Tuesday Literary Club in 1896. Though a women's literary society at its inception, it blossomed into a wide-ranging social club dedicated to Sacramento civic and community interests. For many decades, the club connected women across a variety of sections, from music to bowling, and through its bi-monthly teas. In addition, the group occasionally dedicated itself to philanthropic causes, like raising money for the American Red Cross and United Service Organization during WWII. In 1950, the club reeled from a fire that destroyed most of its grand clubhouse at 2724 L Street, built in 1912. A rebuilt clubhouse opened on the same site in 1952. It would serve as the group's home for decades to come. At its height in the 1960s, the Tuesday Club claimed more than 1,200 members, though it suffered declining membership along with other social clubs through the 1970s and 1980s. Following years of declining participation, the Tuesday Club ceased operation in 2014.
