Scope and Content

Album of 256 original black-and-white photographs, with the simple label "Guatemala '49" affixed to the front cover. Photographer unknown. There are brief handwritten captions throughout (some identifying individual images, some used to describe all the images on a page).
Subject matter includes urban street scenes; several busy markets and street vendors selling food, pottery, wool, blankets, livestock; colonial-era buildings; pre-Columbian monuments and ruins; a volcanic eruption; a carnival; and rural people and scenes of everyday life such as washing clothes, traveling, food preparation, harvesting bananas. Locations identified by the captions include Guatemala City, Quetzaltenango, El Baul, Santiaguito volcano, San Juan Ostuncalco, San Martin, San Francisco, Huehuetenango, Zaculeu, and Puerto Barrios, among others.
