Description
This collection consists of a typed copy of the "Journal of Francis Mellus from June 11, 1838 to March 26, 1847," the original of which is in the Henry E. Huntington Library. The journal was written by Mellus on sea voyages to California and along the California Coast. Also includes an invitation to a ball being hosted by Francisco Mellus in Los Angeles on October 23, 1856.
Background
Francis Mellus was the brother of Henry Mellus, a Massachusetts-born merchant who went to California in 1835. Mellus was also a sailor and merchant. Additional information on Francis Mellus can be found in the Huntington Library Quarterly, vol. 9 no.1 (November 1945), pp. 101-102.
