Biography

Melissa Rose became University Librarian in 1980 after the retirement of Floyd R. Erickson. Rose was initially hired as an Education Librarian in 1964 and later served as Head of Public Services. After becoming University Librarian she immediately took to assessing and streamlining Library services, rearranging the departmental structure, organizing book sales, and starting a large weeding project. Unfortunately, Melissa Rose was also faced with many problems soon after beginning as University Librarian as well. She quelled a small kerfuffle over student behavior in the Biella Room, which eventually led to its closure to the public, and during a minor roof repair in 1988, a large chunk of asbestos fell in the Music Library, an event which quickly led to the Asbestos Abatement Project.
The Asbestos Abatement Project began under Melissa Rose's supervision and progressed through the preliminary budget and assessment phases. This project extended beyond her time as University Librarian (primarily due to concerns of cost), but her initial actions led to an important project which extended for many years thereafter. Melissa Rose was also involved in the implementation of Online Public Access Computers (OPACs) at the end of her time at CSUH. She was an active member of the California Library Association (CLA) and served on many committees. Melissa Rose passed away on December 8, 1996 at age 66.
