MS 917 John (Jack) Boitano Logbooks
This collection includes 60 logbooks, 5 pages of correspondence, 2 empty logbook covers, and a blank logbook, a train pass
identification check, a train register ticket, and a flagman's hold order from a Southern Pacific conductor, John (Jack) Boitano.
The collection is dated between September 1926 to December 1935. Boitano primarily worked in California, in places like Sacramento,
Sparks, Truckee, Oakland, and Gerber for passenger trains. Freight trains go through the United States, however Boitano would
only go as far as Ogden, Utah, where the Southern Pacific jurisdiction ended.
The collection has three types of logbooks, three of them are "Cash Collection's Deposited Book" dated from September 1926
to June 1932, one is a "Freight Conductor's Train Book" dated from July 12, 1931 to July 21, 1931, and the last type is fifty-six
are "Passenger Conductor's Record Book" dated from July 29, 1927 to December 29, 1935. The year 1929 is complete, however
the other years are missing various months. The "Cash Collection's Deposited Book" keep a record of how much cash and the
location Boitano deposited it at. The "Passenger Conductor's Record Book" contain information about the different Southern
Pacific trains he worked on, the pickup and drop off points, and some notes about his daily activities. The "Freight Conductor's
Train Book" kept a log of the type of freight, including fruit, rice, and wheat, and the destination for the freight. The
three pages of correspondence discussed an incident with a passenger, and two are telegrams pertaining to other information
about two passengers.

John (Jack) Boitano worked as a Southern Pacific train conductor. His logbooks confirm his employment with Southern Pacific
from September 1926 to December 1935. He primarily worked on Southern Pacific passenger trains in California, but he briefly
worked on Southern Pacific frieght trains in July 1931.
