Biographical Note
Chang You-ling 張有齡 (Zhang Youling), 1909-2007, was born in Wuxing, Zhejiang Province. In 1934, after graduating from Tsing
Hua University, Chang was awarded the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship and studied civil engineering at the University of Manchester,
United Kingdom. He received his doctoral degree in 1936 and returned to China the next year. Between 1937 and 1949, Chang
taught at several universities, including the National Southwestern Associated University, Sichuan University, and Shanghai
Jiaotong University. After the Chinese Communist takeover, Chang moved to Beijing where he served at the PRC Ministry of Heavy
Industry and the First Ministry of Machine Industry. In 1964, he was elected a Member of the People's Political Consultative
Conference. During the Cultural Revolution, Chang was slated to work in Hubei and Anhui provinces. Due to his academic achievement
in civic and hydraulic engineering, in the 1980s and the 1990s, Chang was invited to be a visiting scholar by multiple universities
in the United States, Taiwan, and Japan. He died in California in 2007.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection contains manuscripts, writings, and research notes by Chang. It also includes Chang's correspondences with
family members such as his wife, Huang Xuezhen (黄雪珍), and daughter, Zhang Wei (张葳), as well as his correspondences with modern
Chinese political figures. Features photos albums related to Chang and his family, publications by Chang and his family, artifacts
and other miscellaneous materials.
