Biographical Note

Tom Pavatea was a Hopi Indian who was a trader on the Hopi reservation. He started his store in the late 1890s and passed away circa 1947. The store lasted until 1965, under the management of Byron Hunter. In that year, the store burned down and was not rebuilt.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes official correspondence and papers of Tom Pavatea from 1933 to 1947. Materials include correspondence, bulletins of the United Indian Traders Association from the 1930s, correspondence to Superintendents from the Commissioners of the Department of the Interior, correspondence to reservation dealers and traders from the Internal Revenue Service, and for TMS and sales reports from 1933-1934.
