Background
Hope Meldeau Gladding, 1889-1987 was Professor of Decorative Arts, Emerita, at UC Berkeley. She graduated from the Rhode Island
School of Design, and taught at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1921 Professor
Gladding joined the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley to give courses in theory of design and color in the
Department of Household Art. Gladding continued in this department for 36 years, taking her turn as chairman, attaining full
professorship and retiring in 1957. Gladding built two distinguished courses, Great Periods of Interior Design and American
Decorative Arts. She was an accomplished photographer, and enlivened these courses with slides she made on her travels. This
collection consists of these slides.
