Description
The Harold Lloyd papers span the years 1919-1938 (bulk 1934-1938) and encompass more than 133 linear feet. The collection contains the files of Harold Lloyd Corporation general manager, William R. Fraser, including financial records and correspondence. There is material on films produced by the company, including THE CAT'S PAW (1934) and production material and financial records for PROFESSOR, BEWARE (1938). The general and personal correspondence includes interoffice communications and fan mail. The financial files include cancelled checks, material on investments in stocks and bonds, and vouchers. There is also financial material on Paramount Pictures, including monthly reports and statements. There are 85 scrapbooks spanning the years from 1920 to 1938, and 1949. The volumes are dedicated to specific films, general publicity, or family. Included are clippings and reviews, ads, letters and telegrams, publicity items, and photographs. Leslie F. Whelan, Lloyd’s press agent and a specialist in foreign publicity, compiled some of the volumes. There are two Mildred Davis scrapbooks dating from 1919 to 1921. The photograph series consists of photographs, photograph albums, stereo slides, transparencies, safety negatives, glass negatives, and original nitrate negatives.
Background
Harold Lloyd was an American actor active in film from 1912 to 1947. After starring in short films as Lonesome Luke, he excelled as a silent screen comedian portraying an optimistic young man sporting trademark black horn-rimmed glasses. He was married to Mildred Davis from 1923 until her death in 1969. Lloyd received a 1952 Honorary Award from the Academy.
