Exhibitions, 1973 - 2003.

Physical Description: 87.4 Linear feet , 69.75 boxes

Arrangement note

The Exhibitions series is arranged into four subseries, organized chronologically according to earliest exhibition openning date present in the subseries. When originally taken from storage the materials were quite dissordered. The subseries were determined in an effort to preserve some of the original order of the records by looking at what records were boxed together, similarities in box and folder labeling, and date ranges. The largest subseries within this series, Exhibitions, 1973 - 1999, consists of materials that could not be placed in any other subseries. There is some overlap in subject matter among series.
It appears that when these were working files they were originally organized alphabetically by subject or exhibition "nickname". The nickname was determined before an official title was constructed for an exhibition for example, the exhibition The Avant-Garde in Russia, 1910-1930: New Perspectives (EX.1630), was called simply "Russian Av. Garde" on file labels for much of the exhibition planning process. To ease access to files related to a particular exhibition are grouped together and each subseries is organized alphabetically by official exhibition or event title as it appears in LACMA's collection management database system, MIMSY. When materials in the series indicated that the exhibition title in MIMSY was incorrect, the title was corrected in the database.
For events and installations, which are present in each series, but are not tracked in MIMSY, the title for the file group was determined by the archivist based on folder labels and contents. Some subseries also include files that cover more than one exhibition, non-exhibition events, or subjects not related to one particular exhibition (such as ticketing). The titles of these events or file groups and their relevant dates have been supplied by the archivist based on the folder contents.
All folders pertaining to the same exhibition installation or subject are grouped together within a subseries with their original labeling transcribed. No effort has been made to organize folders within an exhibition grouping, or the items within folders.

Scope and Contents note

The Exhibitions series consists of 87.4 linear feet or 69.75 boxes of records relating to the organization of exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art that were open or planned to be open from the year 1973 through 2003. Based on the names of correspondents found in the series, these records were probably created by exhibitions staff members Myrna Smoot and John Passi and their assistants.
Included are records pertaining to exhibitions organized by LACMA, exhibitions organized by other institutions and then touring to LACMA, exhibitions proposed by outside organizations to tour to LACMA but ultimately not accepted, as well as exhibitions that were accepted and then cancelled. Exhibitions that were cancelled or not accepted are noted in the container list. For some exhibitions it could not be determined if they were accepted and cancelled or never accepted. These events are accompanied by the note "unknown." Also included are files for installations of artworks and, occasionally, gallery rotations. Since cancelled and exhibitions that are not accepted by LACMA do not appear in the collection management database, their titles are supplied by the archivist based on file contents. Dates for exhibitions that did not take place are accompanied by the note "(proposed)." When not date can be determined for such an exhibition, none is supplied.
Some subseries include files that cover more than one exhibition, non-exhibition events, or other materials generally related to the work of organizing exhibitions. The titles of these events and their relevant dates have been supplied by the archivist based on the folder contents of those subseries.

Exhibitions, 1973 - 1999.

Physical Description: 44.2 Linear feet , 34.25 boxes

Scope and Contents note

This subseries consists of 44.2 linear feet or 34.25 boxes of records relating to exhibitions which were shown at LACMA from 1973 through 1999, and contains 275 groups of records representing one exhibition or topic each. The dates of the records pertaining to each exhibition usually pre- and postdate the exhibition’s run, documenting exhibition preparations, de-installation, and tour if applicable.
Types of records include proposals, correspondence, memos, drafts of grant applications, contracts and checklists, tour arrangements and schedules, reports regarding ticket sales and visitor numbers, payment slips, invoices, press releases, press clippings, gallery brochures, invitations, photographs, slides, budgets, materials relating to audio tours, and other records regarding the planning, promotion, and reception of exhibitions which were shown at LACMA. Exhibitions which are particularly well documented in this series include The Avant-Garde in Russian, 1910-1930: New Perspectives (EX.1630); David Hockney: A Retrospective (EX.1836); A Day in the Country: Impressionism and the French Landscape (EX.1726); German Expressionist Sculpture (EX.1707); Guido Reni, 1575-1642 (EX.1849); Hollywood and History: Costume Design in Film (EX.1832); Light of Asia: Buddha Sakyamuni in Asian Art (EX.1718); and The Machine Age in America 1918-1941 (EX.1810).
The Avant-Garde in Russian, 1910-1930: New Perspectives (EX.1630), at LACMA from July 1980 to February 1981, was organized by LACMA curators Maurice Tuchman and Stephanie Barron and explored the development of Russian modernism in the years immediately before and after the Revolution of 1917 in which artists challenged traditional cultural values. More than 450 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, books, photographs, textiles, and examples of industrial, theatrical, and architectural design represented the work of 40 artists. David Hockney: A Retrospective (EX.1836), at LACMA from February 4, 1988 to January 3, 1989 included 150 paintings, 60 drawings, and 30 photos as well as prints, illustrated books, and examples of Hockney’s collaborative work in stage design. This international loan exhibition, held on the occasion of Hockney’s fiftieth year and was organized by LACMA senior curator of twentieth-century art Maurice Tuchman, and curator of twentieth century art Stephanie Barron
A Day in the Country: Impressionism and the French Landscape (EX.1726) premiered at LACMA and was displayed from June 28 through September 16, 1984featured 127 paintings, focusing on French landscape sites and motifs painted by leading Impressionists. Exhibition design sought to provide understanding of the landscape’s significance within broader social, economic, and ideological contexts of late 19th c. France. The exhibition was part of the Olympic Arts Festival of the 1984 Olympic Games, and traveled to The Art Institute of Chicago and the Grand Palais, Paris.
German Expressionist Sculpture (EX.1707) was on display at LACMA from October 26, 1983 through January 22, 1984 included over 125 sculptures and 25 related works on paper by 33 artists with sculptures in wood, bronze, ceramics, stone, marble, and plaster. Organized by LACMA curator Stephanie Barron, the exhibition focused on spiritual themes and the probing of the psyche covering the period from the beginning of German Expressionist movement through the Nazi declaration of modern art as “degenerate.”
Guido Reni, 1575-1642 (EX.1849) appeared at LACMA from October 15, 1988 to May 14, 1989 and was the first retrospective of Guido Reni’s work to visit America. Jointly organized with LACMA, Pinacoteca Nazionale of Bologna, and Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, the tour began at Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna, moving then to LACMA, and Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas.
Hollywood and History: Costume Design in Film (EX.1832) was organized in association with the Costume Designers Guild and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and showed at LACMA from December 20, 1987 to February 21, 1988. Featuring 50 costumes, hundreds of designers’ sketches, movie stills, and publicity photographs, the exhibition sought to show how historical and contemporary influences shape our view of both the past and the future, as seen through film.
Light of Asia: Buddha Sakyamuni in Asian Art (EX.1718) appeared at LACMA from March 1, 1984 to February 10, 1985. This major international loan exhibition, featuring more than 190 sculptures and paintings presenting the theme of Buddha, was organized by Dr. Pratapaditya Pal, senior curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art, and curator-in-charge of West Asian Art at LACMA.
The Machine Age in America 1918-1941 (EX.1810) was organized by The Brooklyn Museum and was at LACMA as part of a national tour from July 16 to October 18, 1987. The exhibition examined the impact of machine on American art between the two world wars. The Los Angeles exhibition featured a particular focus on 40 local works showing the machine aesthetic of the 1920s and 1930s.
Additionally, some subseries represent more than one exhibition, non-exhibition events, or other materials generally related to the work of organizing exhibitions. The titles of these subseries and their relevant dates have been supplied by the archivist based on the folder contents of those subseries.

General Alphabetical Files, Bulk, 1980-1995 1976 - 2000

Language of Material: English
Physical Description: 20.0 Linear feet , 15.5 boxes

Scope and Contents note

This series consists of 19.4 linear feet of records in 15.5 boxes dating from 1976 through 2000. Based on salutations and signatures on correspondence and memos, these files appear to have been created by Myrna Smoot, John Passi, as well as Elizabeth Algermissen, who held several positions at LACMA including Chief of the Exhibitions Division. The records are diverse in subject matter and format. Subjects sometimes correspond to specific exhibitions but are more likely to be related to general administrative matters relating to exhibitions such as ticketing, attendance, and Acoustiguide tours for exhibitions. Subjects addressed in this series also include events hosted at LACMA such as special installations and the Much Ado About Nothing Fund-Raiser; festivals such as The Museum of Television and Radio Festival; LACMA’s Film and Music Programs departments; as well as publications, grants, and museum attendance. Types of records include memos, brochures, slides, reports, contracts, and applications. This series also included budget backup, confidential HR documents, and blank forms which were removed from this series. If the contents of folders contained documents relating to an exhibition that was shown at LACMA the official exhibition title and number is listed in the folder title in square brackets.

Arrangement note

The contents of this series are arranged alphabetically by folder title. Though the materials had become dissorganized at some point, the organization within boxes suggests that this was likely the order in which they were kept while they were active. Multiple folders relating to the same subject are filed chronologically.

Scope and Contents note

This subseries consists 72 files containing records related to exhibition catalogues dated from 1982 to 1986. They were originally filed together in a group.

Reading Files, 1980-1994

Physical Description: 7.75 Linear feet , 6 boxes.

Arrangement note

The files are arranged in chronilogically. Materials within folders are arranged in reverse chronological order.

Scope and Contents note

This series consists of 7.75 linear feet or six boxes of "Reading Files", organized by month and year. Each folder includes correspondence, memos, press releases, and other materials of relevance to LACMA's exhibition and special event activity. It is likely that some of these materials are duplicated in the Exhibitions or General Alphabetical Files series.
A note on the file folder for May 1985 indicates that two separate reading files began to be kept, one each for Exhibitions Division staff members Myrna Smoot and John Passi. Two separate groups of records, labeled with these names exist only until June 1986 for Ms. Smoot, and December 1986 for Mr. Passi. Later files are undifferentiated. Myrna Smoot left LACMA to become Executive Director of the Art Museum Association of America in June 1986.
Files are missing for March 1983, the years of 1984 and 1987.
