Records created or collected by the Los Angeles March on Washington Committee regarding the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, 1978-1979. The National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights was a grassroots effort to bring together gay and lesbian people and their supporters from across the nation to execute a celebration and demonstration in Washington, D.C., on October 14, 1979.
Background
The National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights was a grassroots effort to bring together gay and lesbian people and their supporters from across the nation to execute a celebration and demonstration in Washington, D.C., on October 14, 1979. The march was first proposed in Autumn 1978 by an ad hoc committee in Minneapolis, but didn't gain momentum until the assassination of Harvey Milk in November of that year.
