Biography/Administrative History
Sherwood Lingenfelter (b. November 18, 1941) served as Fuller Theological Seminary’s,Dean of the School of World Mission from
1999-2003 and Provost from 2003 – 2011. Dr. Lingenfelter continues to serve as a Senior Professor of Anthropology. Taught
courses include “Culture and Transformation”; “Culture, Human Sexuality, and Ministry”; and “Leaders, Denominational Structures,
and Missional Churches.”With his wife, Dr. Judith Lingenfelter, he lived for three years in the Yap Islands of Micronesia;
engaged in research in Brazil, Cameroon, and Suriname. He has served as research and training consultant to SIL from 1977
to 2007 in Papua New Guinea, Borneo, Philippines, Africa, and Latin America. He contributes regularly to mission conferences
and to missionary candidate training for other evangelical mission organizations.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Sherwood Lingenfelter collection collection includes research materials regarding the indigenous peoples of the Yap Islands
of Micronesia. Administrative records concern Fuller Theological Seminary’s School of World Mission (now School of Intercultural
Studies) and Provost’s Office. Formats also include slides, photographs, audio recordings, and video recordings of lectures
given by Dr. Sherwood Lingenfelter at Biola University and Fuller Theological Seminary. Documents range in date from the 1960s
-2010.
