Biography/Administrative History
Moore (1827-1897) was City Surveyor 1857-1860, 1864-1865, 1873-1875. He emigrated from Maine in 1852. After spending time
in Napa, California, he set out on foot and arrived in Los Angeles on April 3, 1854. Soon he began his lifelong work as a
surveyor and a lifelong association and friendship with George Hansen. As City Surveyor and Superintendent of Streets, he
is credited with standardizing, straightening and leveling to uniform grade the city sidewalks.
