Biography
Dr. Hector P. Blejer (or Hector Blejer-Pietro) was born in Caracas, Venezuela
in 1933 and was brought by his parents to Canada as a child. He earned an M.D.
from McGill University in 1958 and a D.I.H. (Industrial Medicine) from the Denne
Occupational Medical Clinic, Toronto, in 1963. He came to the U.S. and received
his medical licenses from the National and the California Boards in 1965. Dr.
Blejer became a citizen of the United States.
From 1965 to 1974 Dr. Blejer served in the California Departments of Health
and Public Health as Head, Statewide Medical and Nursing Services Unit, and
Head, Southern California Bureau of Occupational Health and Environmental
Epidemiology. In 1975 he became Deputy Director, Division of Field Studies and
Clinical Investigations, Cincinnati, Ohio, National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health. In 1976 he returned to Southern California as Director of the
Occupational Health Department, The City of Hope Medical Center, Duarte. Dr.
Blejer established a private practice in 1979 in Los Angeles as a consultant in
occupational and environmental medicine, toxicology, and epidemiology. His
clientele included government agencies at various levels of government, public
and private companies, and labor unions.
Dr. Blejer was a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine, the
American Occupational Medical Association, and the American Academy of
Occupational Medicine, and member of other professional groups. He authored many
articles and book chapters, and produced or contributed to hundreds of reports
on studies and problems in occupational and environmental health. He held
appointments as adjunct or clinical professor at the University of California,
Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, and lectured at other
academic institutions in California and Arizona. He was also a frequent speaker
on occupational, environmental, and consumer protection issues to a great
variety of professional and lay groups, as well as on television and radio.
Scope and Content
This collection is small and spotty. Most of the material stems from Dr.
Blejer's years as a private consultant: health forms and questionnaires he
devised for clients, some correspondence, some documents relating to the
business part of the practice. There are a few reports, and some other bits of
his professional activities. The personal papers consist of a thorough c.v. and
list of published and internal papers and reports, and a fact sheet -- probably
produced for potential clients around the mid-1980s.
The collection is organized into the following series:
- Series 1. Personal Papers.
- Series 2. Professional Papers.
