Scope and Contents

This collection contains one photograph album titled "Memory of South Viet-nam" with 111 color and black-and-white photographs presumably taken in South Vietnam circa 1970. Images were taken at a bar or restaurant; possibly taken at a United States military base camp; and inside of an Army office. Images depict members of the Army and Army Nurses Corps in their uniforms, playing baseball, at social gatherings, and in an office setting. A majority of the photographs contain no information and are undated except for two that are inscribed with "Linda M. Brackett 1-R", "Linda M. Brackett 2-R", and are dated "April 1970" and "1970".

Biographical / Historical

During the Vietnam War, a majority of women serving in the war were nurses. Many of them had very little experience, and were recruited out of nursing school. Nurses worked twelve hour shifts, six days a week, and cared for the wounded, and those sick with tropical diseases. It is reported that anywhere from 7,000-11, 000 women served as nurses starting as early as 1956 when they were recruited to train Vietnamese women in nursing skills.
