Bound in black pebble-grain leather covers, with two-hole binding; gold-stamped cover title, "S.H. Woodruff. Community Developer. Hollywoodland, Dana Point, California." Manufacturer's green and white label on inside back cover of J.L. Hanson Co. of Chicago, identifying album as a Badger album (J.L. Hanson Co. took over the album department of the Heinn Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1922).

Biography/History

Real estate developer, architect, and builder. S.H. Woodruff came from a wealthy Michigan family, and worked as an architect in the East before coming to California. He was involved in the reconstruction of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. He is best known for his development of Hollywoodland, and Dana Point in the 1920s.

Scope and Content

The subdivision, known as the Sherman and Clark Ranch, was developed in 1923 by a real estate syndicate which included Sidney H. Woodruff, Eli P. Clark, the original landowner, Harry Chandler, Gen. M.H. Sherman, and Tracy E. Shoultz. Shoultz died unexpectedly in July 1923, and Woodruff took over as head developer. The first 44 photographs are primarily views of some of the newly-built homes of Hollywood, which were designed in Spanish, Mediterranean, English Tudor, and French Normandy architectural styles. There are two views of the entrance into Hollywoodland, marked by stone arches and tower, beyond which can be seen S.H. Woodruff's office, the Hollywoodland Tract Office, located at 2690 Beachwood Drive. The homes, nestled against the hillsides, are photographed from various perspectives, including front and back; close-ups of special architectural details, gardens, or patios; and as part of the overall streetscape. Several views taken from the hillsides above reveal the layout of winding streets, stone retaining walls, staircases, and quaint street lamps which were intended to give the neighborhood a "European village" look. Two photos taken at night capture the beauty of the grid of the city lights of Los Angeles below. The remaining 48 photos are of black and white architectural renderings of houses designed by various architects, many of them for specific clients named on the drawings. A large number of the renderings are designs by John De Lario for himself, and for clients including C. Dallas Howland, H.A. Clarke, Mack Sennett, oilman Patrick M. Longan, whose Castillo del Lago was located at 6342 Mulholland Highway, Dr. and Mrs. Edwin R. Ribler, Mrs. Helena Lau Giffen, George R. Hannan, Joe Rock, Mrs. Clara Shatto, Sherman A. Hays, Edward W. Hedland, Clair R. Savage, Roderick D. Burnham, and H.S. Belland at 3206 Deronda Drive. Also included are drawings by H. Hasenburger, who designed an English Tudor residence for Ernest E. Rogers; Carl Lindbom who designed "Villa Mithra;" Harry I. Muck whose home for Kirstine and Einar C. Petersen was located at 2706 Beachwood Drive, and completed in 1927; Vincent Palmer who designed the residence of E. Charles Barbour on Deronda Drive, as well as the house at 6108 Dorcas Place; George Garfield Dowey and D. Wesley Coulter.
