Case files Series 3. 1979-2016

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains case files for over 100 cases Chemerinsky was involved in, either as counsel of record, amicus curiae, or consultant. The files include material on the five cases he argued in the Supreme Court of the United States: United States v. Apel (2013), Scheidler v. NOW (2005), Van Orden v. Perry (2005), Tory v. Cochran (2005), and Lockyer v. Andrade (2003). Most of the case files consist of documents from the court, including briefs, petitions for writ of certiorari, orders, motions, and transcripts - although some cases have more documentation than others. Material related to Chemerinsky's involvement in representing Guantanamo Bay detainee Salem Abdul Salem Ghereby ( Gherebi v. Bush) was combined with other material (such as the other habeas corpus cases and Al Odah v. United States, which were consolidated in the Supreme Court case, Boumediene v. Bush) under "Guantanamo detainees". Cases related to Ford Motor Company were grouped together under "Ford litigation" and folders labeled "Old Eastern District of Louisiana filings", which contain various cases, were also grouped together. There are some various cases in the collection where it was unclear how Chemerinsky was involved; these were grouped together but are labeled individually on the folders by case.

Series Arrangement

The series is arranged alphabetically by case name.
