Biographical Note
Álvaro Obregón was a general in the Mexican Revolution who became the President of Mexico from 1920-1924. Obregón's presidency
was the first stable presidency since the Mexican Revolution began in 1910. During his term as president he saw educational
reform, moderate land reform and obtained U.S. diplomatic recognition of the Mexican government in 1923. After his hand-picked
successor, Plutarco Elías Calles, was elected president in 1924, Obregón retired to Sonora but remained influential in Mexican
politics. He ran for president again in 1928 and won, but was assassinated in July of that year before he could begin his
term.
