2. Correspondence 1943-1989

Scope and Content Note

Contains an array of correspondence, spanning over four decades. Included are many personal letters written by Margaret to her long time companion Patricia Hampton, and her good friend and research partner, William (Bill) Moritz. Other correspondence includes letters from researchers of lesbian history, including J.R. Roberts, who compiled Black Lesbians: An Annotated Bibliography (1981) and Lillian Faderman, author of Surpassing the Love of Men (1981); Simone Burgues, Renée Vivien historian and daughter-in-law of Jean Charles-Brun, Renée Vivien's tutor and confidant; Renée Vivien biographers Paul Lorenz, author of Sapho 1900: Renée Vivien (1977), and Jean-Paul Goujot, author of Renée Vivien À Mytilène (1978) and Renée Vivien (1877-1909): Essai De Biographie Et Vues Sur L'oeuvre (1983).

Scope and Content Note

Contains translations from the French poetry of Natalie Clifford Barney (1876-1972), Renée Vivien (1877-1909), and other women who once considered forming an "Academy of Women Writers" in Paris (ca. 1900-1910). Materials include individual manuscripts of Porter's work, as well as a collection of translated poetry entitled Muses 1900, which includes selected poetry from Barney's Souvenirs Indiscrets (1960) and Vivien's Sapho (1903), La Dame à la Louve (1904), Les Kitharedes (1904) and Poésies Complètes (1934).
