Historical note
John Muir College was the second college to be founded at UCSD and admitted its first students in 1967. The college, named
after environmentalist and founder of the Sierra Club, has a humanitarian emphasis on its general education requirements and
a loosely structured curriculum around "sequences" and individual study. The founding provost of Muir College was John Lincoln
Stewart; writer, musician, and educator who taught the Muir course "The Wilderness and Human Values."
Scope and Contents note
The PUBLICATIONS, arranged alphabetically, include information brochures about policies and procedures within Muir College
academics and residential systems, newsletters, and program evaluations. The materials are dated from 1967-2001.
