Historical note

Women at Work was founded in 1979 as the Women's Public Policy Research Center (WPRCC) to study issues surrounding women in the labor force. In 1980, the name was changed to "Women at Work". The founding members, Barbara Burke, Marge Leighton, and Betty Ann Jansson, served as co-executive directors of the organization, which is headquartered in Pasadena. The organization's mission is to empower women by helping them reach their full employment and earnings potential. With the economic downturn in 2008, WAW also began providing services for men. Today, their concentration is helping women search for careers using the online environment and helping women over 50 find employment, in addition to assistance in finding careers in non-traditional fields of employment.

Scope and Contents

The Women at Work records consist of reports, meeting minutes and agendas, memorandums, correspondence, publications, brochures, newsletters, clippings, financial records, and printed ephemera, 1978-2014, detailing the programmatic and fundraising activities of this social service non-profit agency.

Processing Information

The Women at Work records consists of three accessions--two from Betty Ann Jansson and one from Marge Leighton. Ms. Leighton's files have been segregated from the bulk of the records in order to maintain their original order; as a result there is duplication, primarily with regard to Board of Directors meetings. Ms. Leighton's files contain many handwritten notes, and thus provide additional context to the bulk of the records.
