Scope and Content Note

Contains the publication (item 01) and photographic prints of images used in the publication (items 02-09). The photographic prints were taken by a variety of photographers, some of whom are identified. Known photographers include Gabriel Moulin, Lothers & Young, Morton & Co., and Walter A. Scott.

These materials were donated by Dwight R. Messimer. It is unknown where he acquired the volume or the photographic prints. All of the prints have printer's marks on them, so they appear to be the prints used to create the volume. It seems likely that some of them were at one point in the possession of someone on the Harbor Board (possibly Walter A. Sweat, Traffic Manager).

Biography/Organization History

The Board of State Harbor Commissioners (BSHC) was responsible for developing, maintaining, and operating the Port of San Francisco from 1863 to 1969. One of its major projects was planning and constructing the seawall south of the Ferry Building, from 1909-1910. Once the seawall was constructed, the water was filled in to create the Embarcadero and seawall lots (Corbett, p. 77).

The BSHC was responsible for "a corridor of land and water that runs along the waterfront from Fisherman's Wharf at the northern and eastern edges of the city to the San Mateo County line, including the two-hundred-foot-wide Embarcadero and the seawall lots on the west side of the Embarcadero" as well as the extensive wharves and associated facilities at China Basin, Islais Creek, and India Basin [as well as] the Belt Railroad " [and] the rail yards on many of the seawall lots." (Corbett, p. 35)

In addition to the BSHC, the City and County of San Francisco, the State of California, and the federal government all participated in substantial ways to regulate and support the port's development.

These materials were donated by Dwight R. Messimer. It is unknown where he acquired the volume or the photographic prints. All of the prints have printer's marks on them, so they appear to be the prints used to create the volume. It seems likely that some of them were at one point in the possession of someone on the Harbor Board (possibly Walter A. Sweat, Traffic Manager).

Large crowd gathered on the pier next to the vessel. Passengers already on board the vessel are throwing streamers. It appears that the name of the vessel is MATSONIA (the name can be partially seen on a life saving ring). Items 10-51. Contains photographs of vessels in San Francisco during the 1900s-1920s (primarily cargo vessels) and piers and maritime activity along the San Francisco waterfront between 1913 and the 1920s.

The photographic prints were taken by a variety of photographers, many of whom are unidentified. Known photographers include: Cardinell Vincent Co.; Lothers & Young Studios; Morton Photographs; Gabriel Moulin; Swadley; Taylor Photo-Publicity Service; and Toyo Kisen Kaisha, Oriental S.S. Co., Advertising Department.

Items 10-37. The vessels are arranged alphabetically by name, with unidentified vessels at the end.

Contains photographs of vessels in San Francisco during the 1900s-1920s. Primarily views of cargo vessels, with some passenger vessels, merchant vessels, tugboats, military vessels and a fireboat.

The photographic prints were taken by a variety of photographers, many of whom are unidentified. Known photographers include: Cardinell Vincent Co.; Lothers & Young Studios; Morton Photographs; Gabriel Moulin; Swadley; Taylor Photo-Publicity Service; and Toyo Kisen Kaisha, Oriental S.S. Photograph appears to have been taken on launching day. There are flags on the vessel (inluding one that says: "U.I.W. Co." (Union Iron Works Co.) and a crowd of people on board the vessel as well as on the shore.
