Abstract: The Herbert H.D. Peirce papers (1910-1916) consists almost exclusively of documents relating to Pierce's studies of conditions
in the camps and among German and Austro-Hungarian prisoners of war in 1915.

Herbert Henry Davis Peirce (1849-1916) was a U.S diplomat in Russia during World War I. Peirce was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary
in 1915 to assist Ambassador David Francis in Russia with special missions, in particular, relating to the interests of the
Central Powers in Russia, such as examining the conditions in prisoner of war camps.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection includes correspondence, reports, architectural sketches, and other materials relating to German and Austro-Hungarian
prisoners of war in Russia, 1915-1916. Documents relate to Peirce's studies of the conditions within Russian prisoner of war
camps in Siberia and the Russian Far East.
